Hi SEO Newbies,
I’m a Newbie too!
Since 2023, I’ve been the in-house SEO specialist for a dental group with over 80 unique brands under its wing. My job? To optimize each of these websites one by one. Through this hands-on experience, I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge—valuable insights and lessons from both successes and slip-ups.
That’s why I created this SEO Newbies Hub: to share what I’ve learned with those just starting their SEO journeys. Whether you’re looking to avoid common pitfalls or discover effective strategies, this is a space where we can all learn and grow together.
My misconceptions about SEO before becoming an in-house SEO guy
1. SEO Is a One-Time Task
Before becoming an in-house SEO professional, I thought SEO was something you could set and forget. I believed that once you optimized a website, it would maintain its rankings indefinitely. However, SEO is an ongoing process that requires constant attention, updates, and adjustments. Search engines continually evolve, and so do competitors, making it essential to regularly revisit and refine your strategies to maintain and improve rankings.
2. Keyword Stuffing Equals Success
I used to think that cramming as many keywords as possible into content would automatically boost a site’s rankings. This misconception led me to overlook the importance of content quality and user experience. In reality, search engines penalize keyword stuffing, and it’s far more effective to focus on creating valuable, relevant content that naturally incorporates keywords while prioritizing readability and engagement.
3. Link Quantity Over Quality
I initially believed that the sheer number of backlinks was the key to SEO success. I assumed that more links meant higher rankings, regardless of their source. However, I’ve since learned that the quality of backlinks is far more important than quantity. High-quality, relevant links from authoritative sites can significantly boost your SEO, while low-quality, spammy links can harm your site’s reputation and rankings.
4. SEO Is Just About Search Engines
Before diving deep into SEO, I thought it was solely about optimizing for search engines and their algorithms. I didn’t fully grasp that SEO is also about optimizing for the user. User experience, site usability, and content relevance play a critical role in SEO success. Search engines prioritize sites that offer a seamless, valuable experience to users, making it essential to balance technical optimization with user-focused strategies.
5. Rankings Are the Only Metric That Matters
I used to think that the ultimate goal of SEO was to achieve high rankings on search engine results pages (SERPs). While rankings are important, they are just one piece of the puzzle. Conversions, engagement metrics, and overall website traffic are equally crucial. A site can rank well, but if it doesn’t drive relevant traffic or conversions, those rankings are meaningless.
6. SEO Can Deliver Immediate Results
I once believed that SEO changes would quickly translate into improved rankings and traffic. This misconception led to frustration when results didn’t appear overnight. In reality, SEO is a long-term strategy that requires patience. It can take weeks or even months to see the full impact of optimizations, as search engines need time to crawl, index, and rank updated content.
7. Social Media Has No Impact on SEO
I mistakenly thought that social media had no real connection to SEO. However, while social signals may not directly influence rankings, a strong social media presence can indirectly boost SEO. Social media platforms can drive traffic, increase brand visibility, and help content gain traction, all of which contribute to improved SEO performance.
8. You Can Rely Solely on Tools
Before becoming an in-house SEO, I believed that using the right tools was all you needed to succeed. I relied heavily on automated tools for keyword research, site audits, and tracking. However, I quickly learned that while tools are helpful, they can’t replace human insight and experience. Tools can provide data, but interpreting that data and making strategic decisions requires a deep understanding of SEO principles and the specific context of your site.
9. Meta Tags Are the Most Important SEO Element
I was under the impression that optimizing meta tags was the most critical aspect of SEO. While meta tags are important for on-page SEO, they are just one of many factors that influence rankings. Content quality, site structure, backlinks, and user experience all play significant roles in SEO success. Focusing too much on meta tags can lead to neglecting other crucial areas.
10. SEO Is All About Google
I used to think that SEO was synonymous with optimizing for Google alone. While Google is the dominant search engine, it’s not the only one. Other search engines like Bing and even platform-specific search algorithms (like those on YouTube or Amazon) require different optimization strategies. Additionally, optimizing for Google doesn’t mean you can ignore other channels that drive traffic, such as direct visits, referrals, and social media.
